For the record, some transcripts I made of messages dad left on my phone yesterday, followed by my interpretation:

I'm just thinking...
that, err, we [clears throat] one...
going right down, we go up to in, err, in, in our way here..umm, umm...
up, up the hill and then straight down on the other side at the bottom and we could go into that building which were, were for the troops, and, err, and you don't have to pay anything other than for the meal of course...
ah...
I'm just wondering if you have a thought that we could do that some time.

I'm just thinking about going down to, right to the to, to, to, to where the sea is...
Right down, right down, right down to Weston Avenue and, umm, and, and going into the place where you've never been before, see...
And, 'cause it's basically de...associated with the troops, you see, during the war.

Used to be able to get in there very easily and get, been, be, being in the forces we can get in there [mumble mumble]...
very well indeed...
And I'm just wondering if you'd be interested just to see it.

It was the phrase 'going into the place where you've never been before' that brought me up short and caused me to think I ought to make a record of these messages. At the time I had no idea what dad was talking about and it seemed complete gibberish. I now realise it is not. Here is what he has been trying to say:

"I'm just wondering if you would like to go to the Harbord Diggers Club for a meal some time."

However, since he has clearly forgotten the name of the club, he has resorted, as you should, to substituting descriptions of where it is (by the sea), how you get there (up to the top of Weston Avenue and then down the other side), and what it is for (a club for returned servicemen).

Under the circumstances, not a bad attempt at suggesting a date.
